- R.I.P. Ohio/Columbus is an offshoot of R.I.P.
Ohio, which was founded in 2004 by
Vanessa Scafidi. The Columbus Division has officially been around
since 2005, although many of our members have been investigating the
paranormal on their own for much longer. We are grateful to
Vanessa for letting us join her team, and to all the members of R.I.P.
Ohio for their mentoring over the past few years.
- We are not afraid to experiment with new and different
techniques. You won't find us saying "but that's not
the way they
do
things on Ghosthunters!" We believe that it is important to
expand our
knowledge of the paranormal world by being open minded and creative in
how we approach investigations. Much to our amusement, some
of the experimental techniques we've been using for years have started
showing up on Ghosthunters.
- Currently, we are focussed on 2 investigations that
have
been ongoing since the spring and fall of 2006. While we do
enjoy and
have investigated a variety of sites, we feel that concentrating on
repeat
investigations in the same place gives us a unique opportunity to
acquaint ourselves more thoroughly with the haunting phenomena
there. We try to arrange to investigate each of our 2 main sites
at least once a month.
- We believe that a healthy degree of skepticism is
important. While most of us have seen enough evidence of ghosts
over
the years to be convinced of their existence, that doesn't mean that we
blindly accept every bit of evidence as proof of the paranornal.
An
honest effort to debunk our findings is made in every case.
- While we use scientific tools and techniques
to do our
investigations, we are also interested in direct communication with
spirits through psychic means. Many of us have had psychic
experiences all of our lives. When one is psychically getting
verifiable information they could not have known otherwise, it seems
silly to disregard it because mainstream science has no
explanation for
it. Scientists are constantly discovering new things about
the natural world. It would be a matter of intellectual conceit
to believe that if science can't currently explain it, then it doesn't
exist.
- We want to make the world a better place through our
knowledge about the paranormal. Whether it's helping a home owner
deal with a haunting, tending graves at local cemeteries, or leading
ghost tours for the Columbus Landmarks Foundation, our members have a
strong commitment to community service.
- Likewise, we feel that it is important for the
paranormal
community to respect the community at large. We are continuing
the R.I.P. Ohio Anti-Trespassing/ Anti-Vandalism inititive.
- We are not the right group to join or contact for help
if
you want to use this to get on tv or in the paper. Media coverage
would be a distraction from focusing our energy on the investigations
themselves. We also don't have the time or staffing to handle any
extra casework that would be produced by publicity.
- We believe that the paranormal community itself should
behave as a community. Cooperation with other groups is
important
to us. As long as we are not bound by confidentialty clauses, we
are open to sharing our findings about our investigations and about
what experimental techniques seem to be the most effective.
- We
believe that ghosts are people, too, and should be
treated with the same respect you'd give any living person. We do
not use aggressive baiting techniques to get a rise out of the
spirits. We also try not to make the spirits feel like they are
being interrogated
when
we do evp sessions.
