Notable history:
Buxton Inn is the oldest
continually operated Inn in the state,
having been built in 1812. It was used as a coach stop in the
early days.
Reported hauntings include the spirits of coachmen and a little
boy in the basement tavern and that of Major Buxton, who was
the owner in the last half of the 19th century, in the dining
room. A ghost cat, also named Major Buxton, has been seen
and felt. Bonnie Bounell, the owner in the first half of the 20th
century has also been seen in her old living quarters and the
fragrance of her gardenia perfume has been noticed. Aside
from the tavern and main dining room, hot spots include room
9, which was Mrs. Bounell's bedroom, room 7, and the yellow
dining room upstairs.
Significant Phenomena
Observed on Investigation:
Notes:
We stayed in room 7, which consisted of a main room and an
adjoining smaller room containing an alcove with a second
bed, a shower, and a small restroom. Every time Nellie laid
on the bed in the alcove, she felt a dizzy sensation in her
forehead.
4:00 p.m.
A couple of photos taken of
the alcove showed some odd light
anomolies. The anomolies were not noticed until the photos
were viewed on a computer at home, so experimentation to
debunk them was not possible. One suggestion is that they
might be reflections from the camera flash off the overhead
lamp, although they don't seem quite consistent with that.
5:00 pm
Nellie smelled a strong, sweet perfume smell in the southwest
corner of the main room. The husband could not confirm the
smell as he had a bad cold.
9:30 p.m.
The presence of an arrogant, dark haired man in a green cutaway coat
with light tan breeches was felt in the main dining room. Note:
several months later, an old employee confirmed that a man in a green
coat had been seen in that dining room by other guests over the years.
2:00 a.m.
Nellie felt a weight on
top of the covers next to her left calf. A
sound like a cat purring started and lasted for about 5 minutes.
The noise level was consistent with the purring of an average
cat heard from that distance. Attempts to find a natural
explanation for the noise were fruitless. The
weight might be
explained by the heavy comforter possibly getting bunched up.
